Geology of the Ossipee Mountains Guided Hike

 August 26, 2022 • 9:00 am – 2:30 pm

The Lakes Region Conservation Trust is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the conservation of the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area in Moultonborough! Join us this summer on one of our guided hikes to explore this beautiful conserved land!

The Ossipee Mountains are famous amongst geologists as a classic example of a ring-dike complex. Join us Friday, August 26th at 9:00 am for a guided hike up to Bald Knob located at the Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area. During the hike, we will be discussing the fascinating geology of the area. LRCT Trustee Russ Wilder will lead participants on this  easy/moderate hike to Bald Knob, passing the columnar Basalt (or Rhyolite?) exposure on the Bald Knob Cutoff Trail.  After lunch on the top of Bald Knob, we will return through the Shannon Brook gorge to the parking lot at approximately 2:30 pm. Total distance is 5.2 miles.
