Cold Spring Trail Reopened

July 9, 2024

The Cold Spring Trail at Castle in the Clouds Conservation Area has reopened after a month of trail work conducted by Recon Trail Design LLC. This historic trail was built as a carriage road over 100 years ago. With the help of Recon Trail Design, the trail should last 100 more!

This segment of trail experiences persistently wet soils. Over time, the trail base eroded, creating a muddy gully. To restore the trail and make it more sustainable, Recon Trail Design focused on rebuilding the trail base and tread surface and improving drainage.

Their work included installing stone retaining walls to preserve the new trail material and creating ditches on the uphill side of the trail. They also improved the grade dips on the trail to channel water from the ditches across the trail and to the drains. This included three stone-hardened grade dips on the upper section of the trail.

The trail base was then rebuilt using layers of course and small crushed stone, allowing water to percolate under the tread surface, and a stone dust gravel mix was used for the final tread surface. In total, about 220 tons of material, or 440,000 pounds of rock and gravel, was moved and installed during the process.

We couldn’t be happier with the way this section of trail was restored. Be sure to take a look at the work done the next time you are hiking the Cold Spring Trail.
