Thoreau's 2008 Red Hill ClimbIn July 1858, the noted author, philosopher, and naturalist Henry David Thoreau made his second trip through New Hampshire's Lakes Region and White Mountains. On July 5, 1858, Thoreau climbed Red Hill, where the Lakes Region Conservation Trust now owns and stewards over 2,500 acres of land. In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Thoreau's ascent, LRCT offered a hike up Red Hill on July 5, 2008. A Thoreau scholar with particular expertise in conveying a sense of Thoreau's life spent the morning in character speaking with hikers along the trail, and in the afternoon he presented a short program at the top of the mountain. A video clip from the hike can be viewed below: |
